“PEOPLE CAN LAY BARE THEIR POTENTIAL BUT ONLY IF THEY ARE GIVEN DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY”

Görkem Volkan hosted the fifth in the conversation series “Office Chats with Tuna”, which broadcasts on Arkitera’s YouTube channel in 15 days. The other host of the conversation, which Cemal Çobanoğlu moderated, is Tuna Office Sales & Marketing Department Head and Tuna Girsberger General Manager Mehmet Arda.

At the start of the conversation, Görkem Volkan mentioned right away the educational process and his decision to open an office.

“Architecture really positively affected my practice after education in different countries and disciplines”

“Seeing how architecture developed with traditional structure techniques in restoration education was really advantageous for me,” he said. “I thought later that I completed my architecture education having went to Pratt for a semester and graduated from Yeditepe University, but it continued even more excitedly for me. I worked at Nabil Gholam Architects in Lebanon. A really important position was given to me like design chief aide. People can lay bare their potential but only if they are given duty and responsibility. Architecture really positively affected my practice after education in different countries and disciplines.”

“The execution of architecture necessitates art and artisanship”

In the proceeding segments of the conversation, Görkem responded to Çobanoğlu’s upon him asking whether architecture is art.

“The execution of architecture necessitates art but it is also necessary to pay attention to theory,” he said. “When artisanship in something is sought after, art is brought as an addition to the end of that. In this sense, my view is that architecture necessitates art and artisanship. But an architect isn’t an artist nor is the object that emerges a work of art.”

“Less is a Bore”

“While organizing this exhibition, we wanted to do work that would scrutinize now concentric art can be with architecture and this,” said Mehmet Arda, when mentioning the ‘Less is a Bore’ exhibition he did together with Artnivo.

“It got a lot of attention both at the opening and afterwards.”
